A 28-year-old Tompkins County man died Saturday morning in a fire at his residence in the town of Lansing, authorities said.

Ryan Burris, 28, of 88 Buck Road, was found dead when emergency personnel arrived at his home at about 4:47 a.m., said Tompkins County Sheriff Kenneth Lansing.

Three other Lansing men — Steven Miller, Michael Adams and Matthew Adams — were in the house at the time of the fire. Michael Adams and Matthew Adams suffered some burns and smoke inhalation, Lansing said. Miller was not injured. All three men were outside when firefighters arrived, Lansing said.

"There is no final determination of the cause of this fire," Lansing said. The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was caused by careless smoking, he said. The house did not have working smoke detectors, Lansing said.

Michael Adams and Matthew Adams were taken by private vehicle to Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca for treatment, Lansing said. Matthew Adams was in stable condition Sunday night, a Cayuga Medical Center official said. Michael Adams was treated and released.
