A 16-year-old is being held at the youth detention center in Clark County in connection with a fatal stabbing of a New Albany man Saturday night.

Manuel Jennings, 26, died at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services of multiple stab wounds, Floyd County Coroner Leslie Knable said over the weekend.

The stabbing reportedly occurred at about 9 p.m. on the sidewalk or street in front of Jennings' residence on the 1100 block of Crystal Ave. in New Albany. Jennings was admitted to Floyd Memorial Hospital at 9:15 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m.

"The victim had lost a large amount of blood before the first squad arrived on the scene," Knable said.

She said the death was ruled a homicide. One knife was recovered from the scene, but it has not been determined if that was the knife used in the attack.

The prosecutor's office has not yet decided whether the juvenile will be waived into court as an adult. A detention hearing is expected in Floyd County early this week.

"We can hold him up to seven days prior to having to make that determination [about whether to charge him as an adult]," said Keith Henderson, Floyd County prosecutor. "The investigation is continuing. Depending on what comes out of that investigation, we'll determine how to proceed."

New Albany Police Department Detective Steve Bush said the investigation is in the early stages and deferred all questions to the prosecutor's office. Henderson said the victim and suspect were acquainted with one another before the stabbing.

"I think there had been an altercation earlier that evening that culminated with the stabbing," Henderson said.

Knable said the attack may have been related to an incident that occurred Friday night.

"I know the victim's father and brother were hospitalized the night before after an assault," Knable said. "There was heightened security in the area after the assault. I think they [the police] felt something further might happen and it did."

According to Knable, emergency medical services personnel said there were at least 20 people at the residence when they arrived.

Knable said she heard from sources that the juvenile has confessed to the stabbing, but that NAPD may be looking into another possible suspect.

Information will not be released about the juvenile suspect unless a decision is made to try him as an adult.
