A well-known West Michigan real estate agent recently charged with two misdemeanors for housing-related crimes has committed suicide.

Marshall Henry Redder, 50, was found at 4124 Kenowa Ave. SW with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Police were called to the residence at 2:46 p.m. on the report of a suicide.

Redder last month pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor allegations of deceiving his tenants by improperly using their security deposits and not keeping properties in reasonable repair.

Grand Rapids police said Redder tried to confuse renters on their legal rights by renting homes on an as-is basis, contrary to state housing rules that require units to be in "reasonable repair."

A complaint alleges Redder tried to hide the details in rental agreements.

The charges originate from a Nov. 30 complaint from the 1900 block of Chamberlain Avenue SE off Burton Street between Kalamazoo and Breton avenues, according to court records.

Court records list the alleged victim as a 77-year-old woman.
