The Kansas Highway Patrol says a family, including two children, from Scott City died in a plane crash in Jefferson County Friday afternoon.

Family members were identified as Richard Dylan Spencer, 35 years of age; Amy Beth Spencer, 34 years of age; and their daughters Chase Spencer, 7 years of age; and Ansley Spencer, 5 years of age.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig says the plan crashed into a muddy corn field on K4 just south of Meriden, and it may have had engine trouble before crashing. A witness says the motor sputtered and then cut off before the plane crashed three miles northeast of Topeka.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the six-seat Beechcraft is registered to Precision Ag & Seed Services LLC. Airport officials say the plane circled once, missed the approach and tried to make another approach before crashing.
