A tipster helps U.S. Marshals and Philadelphia police track down the suspected killer of a Penn State student.
Mohan Varughese was a senior at Penn State Abington, majoring in psychology with dreams of working with underprivileged children.
But police say the 23-year-old was murdered for his motorcycle. Police say it happened on the 2200 block of North Camac Street. That was on May 9th just days before his graduation.
On Thursday, police identified the killer as 19-year-old Jeffrey Little. In less than 24 hours, police and U.S. Marshals arrested their fugitive.
Nafisa Outlaw, an Eyewitness said, "We were in the hallway and all we saw was the cops push down C-1."
Police say the anonymous 9-1-1 tip caller led authorities to apartment C-1 in an apartment complex on the 3100 block of North 16th street. Inside a rear bedroom, police say they found Little — hiding under a bed.
Outlaw added, "If he did kill somebody, he does need to get locked up and deserve to be where he is."
According to court documents, Little was most recently arrested twice on drug-related charges. In March, he was sentenced to 6-months of house arrest. Robert Malvestuto, chief of the city's Adult Probation and Parole Department, said authorities were alerted to Little's status as a fugitive after the March 28 snipping of his electronically monitored bracelet. And police say Little was out roaming the streets, looking for trouble when he crossed paths with Varughese who was out visiting his girlfriend.
Capt. James Clark with the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit said, "For no other reason than he wants his keys to his motorcycle and when he doesn't get it quick enough, he shoots and kills him. It's very sad. It's very senseless."
Police say Little has been booked on murder charges.
Authorities say the anonymous tipster will be entitled to the $2,500 reward that had been offered in this case.
