A Wyoming woman was killed in a freak high-speed crash after the golf cart she was riding in careened out of control on a hill and hit a tree, authorities said on Monday.

Ched Voyles, 36, and his wife Jill Voyles, 47, were traveling in a 2011 Yamaha cart on a road leading to a golf course in their northeast Wyoming hometown of Hulett on Friday, when he lost control of the vehicle while coasting down a hill, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.

The cart hurtled off the road and smashed into a tree, ejecting Ched Voyles and trapping his wife, Wyoming Highway Patrol Sergeant John Townsend said.
Authorities pulled Jill Voyles out of the wreckage using a hydraulic tool called the "jaws of life," authorities said.

She was taken by ambulance to a nearby airport, where she died of her injuries while awaiting an airlift to a regional hospital, Townsend said.
Ched Voyles was in critical condition at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in South Dakota, officials said.
