A Crowley man died in a Fort Worth hospital yesterday after he was found unconscious by some railroad tracks with his 2-year-old son on his chest, which happened shortly after he allegedly shot and killed his wife, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The son is now in the custody of relatives and was reportedly unharmed.

Corey DeWater, 24, died Monday afternoon and the cause of his death is under investigation, although the Johnson County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that he had overdosed on drugs.

The Crowley police responded to a 911 call about a disturbance Thursday night at the DeWaters' home at the 100 block on Hirth Drive.

"Their initial investigation revealed the suspect had shot his wife multiple times and fled with their 2-year-old son," the Sheriff's Department said in news release.

Ashley DeWater, who was 22 and Corey's wife, was pronounced dead around 11:30, the medical examiner's office reported on its website.

While a bulletin was posted for finding DeWater and his son, Johnson County sheriff's deputies found DeWater's wrecked car about an hour after the initial 911 call in Egan, which is about 10 miles away. The engine was still hot, so the deputies deducted DeWater and his son were close.

They found DeWater about a half mile from his car near the railroad tracks near Farm Road 2280. He was unconscious with his son sitting on top of him and had been hospitalized in critical condition through the weekend.

Sheriff Bob Alford said in the release that DeWater's father said his son "had confessed to killing his wife," and that he was "contemplating suicide or 'suicide by cop.'"
