Authorities have released the name of a 23-year-old Sheridan man who was shot and killed by a police officer he allegedly stabbed in the arm.

The Sheridan County Coroner's Office on Wednesday identified the man who was killed as Jesse Salveson.

County Attorney Matt Redle says investigators are trying to determine if the shooting was a legitimate use of force by the officer, whose name has not been released.

The Sheridan Press reports the officer killed Salveson on Monday evening after responding to a domestic disturbance at a local residence. The officer, who was stabbed in the arm during an altercation, was treated at a Sheridan hospital and has since been released.

The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation

SHERIDAN, Wyo. — In tribute to my son Jesse, whom I love: Jesse Priest Salveson was the light of our eyes. He loved to laugh and to bring laughter into other peoples' lives.

He was born July 27, 1987, at Memorial Hospital, Cheyenne, Wyo. He was adopted by Brian Obermueller and Marlene Salveson (fka Obermueller) on July 30, 1987. Jesse was baptized into eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord on August 16, 1987, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan, Pastor Garwood officiating. His baptismal cake read, "I am Jesus' Little Lamb." He never stopped believing in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. As a child in Cheyenne, he attended Trinity Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod and Trinity Day School until the sixth grade. He felt honored to play the lead role of Nebuchadnezzar in one of his school plays. He was confirmed May 5, 2002, at Trinity by Pastor Caspersen.

Although it has been too short of a time, how blessed we feel that Jesse was such a beautiful part of our lives. Jesse was called to our Lord's waiting arms on July 4, 2011, in Sheridan.

Jesse was blessed to marry Sarah Cummings on May 24, 2008. Jesse and Sarah both worked at the Walmart in Sheridan.

Survivors include Jesse's wife, Sarah, and her family, his mother Marlene Salveson, grandmother Violet Salveson, aunt Denise Day, her husband Barry, his cousins Justin and Jamie, and his great-niece Jolen. He is also survived by so many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who miss him so dearly; and by Brian Obermueller and his family, and Phil Brown and his family.

Jesse was preceded in death on his mother's side by his beloved grandfather Sivert Clarence Salveson, who was born in Sheridan on July 26, 1927. Jesse missed being born on his grandfather's birthday by only two hours. He and his grandpa were more than grandfather and grandson, they were best friends.

He was also preceded in death by his grandfather and grandmother, Reinold and Martha Obermueller.

Jesse loved to read, he loved the theater, movies, DC comics, exotic pets, and Tuesday night Bible study at the Wesleyan Church. But above all, Jesse loved to make people laugh.

In Christ you have reached your final victory. Romans 6:3-5: "Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? ...If we have been united with him in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection."

Memorial services are planned for 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, at the Wesleyan Church in Sheridan. Jesse, we will miss you with all our hearts; rest in the peace of Christ our Lord.
