The death of a 27-year-old pregnant inmate was natural, caused by an ectopic pregnancy, the Marion County Coroner's Office ruled Tuesday.

Amber Redden, who was two months pregnant, had been moved from a medical ward at the Marion County Jail to Liberty Hall, a privately operated 250-bed minimum security women's facility on East Washington Street.

"The cause of death was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy that led her to fatally hemorrhage," Indianapolis police Sgt. Linda Jackson said. "Ms. Redden's family has been notified."

Family members talked to 6News on Monday, expressing concern about Redden's death and demanding answers about how she died.

Redden's mother, Lisa Nipper, said she grew concerned when Redden called her on Saturday after having been at Liberty Hall for just a few days, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

"She said, 'Mom, I'm not feeling well,' and I said, 'Well, Amber, go tell somebody and go lay down,'" Nipper said.

Redden's mother said she received calls from the daughter of another inmate telling her that Redden was having seizures. Nipper said her daughter had no history of seizures and that she called the jail.

"They said that she was just overheated. She needed to be in a cooler room, so they put her in a cooler room," Nipper said.

Redden's sister, Jamie Nipper, rushed to the jail in hopes of finding out what was wrong.

"In the doorway, they wouldn't let nobody in. Where you go in the reception area, they were just huddled there for the longest time," she said.

Jamie Nipper said she was told to wait outside and was given no information. When she was finally let in, she was told her sister had died.

"They made me identify her with a picture of the tube in her mouth. I can't get that picture out of my head. I want to know what happened to my sister. She doesn't have any medical conditions that could cause this," Jamie Nipper said. "She has two boys. I mean, there's got to be an answer why."

Redden's mother expressed anger that officials wouldn't tell her the circumstances that led to her daughter's death. She said Redden had been on some medication but was generally healthy. She's not sure if her daughter received medication while in the jail.

Redden was serving an 18-month sentence for theft. Lisa Nipper said her daughter had troubles but was working to turn her life around. Redden was expected to be released from jail in a couple of weeks.
