A 14-year-old girl died Friday night from injuries suffered a day earlier after she jumped out of a moving stolen van.

Police saw the van in the 6100 block of South Marshfield Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, Chicago police said. As police pulled up behind the van, it accelerated and the victim jumped out, police said.

The victim, identified as Shonique Young, 14, of the 6100 block of South Paulina Street, was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m. Friday at Stroger Hospital, said a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

After Young jumped, the van ended up crashing further down the block, police said, but they could not say how fast it was going. "At this time, there's no indication there was a [police] pursuit involved," said Officer JoAnn Taylor.

A 13-year-old boy who was driving the van was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and was ticketed for driving without a license and negligent driving, Taylor said.
