A Chesterton woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon, while driving what police said was a stolen pickup truck.
According to Porter County sheriff's police, officers responded to a crash shortly after 1 p.m. at Calumet Avenue and Woodmere Drive, where they found a mangled silver pickup truck on a landscaped lot.

The driver, Sydney Klikus, 22, of Chesterton, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Witnesses told police Klikus was traveling southbound on Calumet Avenue at a high rate of speed, when she left the roadway for unknown reasons.

Upon leaving the road, the truck skinned the bark off of two trees and knocked over several others before it came to rest.

Minutes after the crash, police said the truck's cab was virtually unrecognizable and its front end was flattened. A mangled aluminum toolbox once mounted to the bed of the truck was flung across the yard.

Police said the truck's owner reported it stolen shortly after the crash,.

The Porter County coroner's office is scheduled to conduct toxicology tests to determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
