Services are set for an Army helicopter pilot from Hubbard who died in a test flight last week.
Twenty-nine year old Chief Warrant Officer Stanley Blane Hepfner was aboard the helicopter when it crashed at a base in Hawaii. Hepfner was a 1998 graduate of Hubbard High School. Two men were flying the OH-58D helicopter when they died in a "hard" landing at the Wheeler Army Airfield.
According to published reports out of Hawaii, Hepfner loved being a pilot and and wanted to make a career out of the military. Blane Hepfner's mother, Renee Tossert, said her home in Hubbard was filled with well-wishers. "He was well-loved," Tossert said. "He was very much an individual who loved his job. He is the hero that I have always wanted him to be."
The military has said the accident is under investigation and a team from the Combat Readiness Center in Fort Rucker, Ala., will conduct an investigation.
Hepfner was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 6th Calvary Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. He enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 1998. He was commissioned as a Warrant Officer in 2002. While enlisted, Hepfner was sent to Kosovo, Egypt and Iraq.
According to Blane's father, Stan Hepfner, "He joined (the military) right out of high school." When he enlisted, I was against it at first. But I am so proud of him. He went in as a nobody and worked his way up to Warrant Officer."
Calling hours for Stanley Blane Hepfner will be held Monday, June 8 from 5pm-8pm at Kelley-Robb Funeral Home. Hepfner will be buried with full military honors at Hubbard Union Cemetery Tuesday June 9 at 11am.
