A man died of an apparent heart attack shortly after running from a routine traffic stop in Southeast Portland, police said.

An autopsy showed Monday 26-year-old Darris Eugene Johnson had a "significantly" enlarged heart. Toxicology tests were pending.

Johnson was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for a broken tail light at SE 122nd Avenue and SE Bush Street just after 4 a.m. Sunday, according to Portland Police Lt. Robert King.

Johnson had outstanding warrants for dealing cocaine and resisting arrest.

The back seat passenger, who had an outstanding felony warrant, gave officers false information and then ran away when they ran a computer check, King said.

Johnson was caught after a foot pursuit, and officers noticed he was having trouble breathing. When his condition worsened they called for an ambulance and began performing CPR, according to King.

He was admitted to Portland Adventist Hospital just before 6 a.m. and was pronunced dead two hours later, King said. Medical staff said the man tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, and he apparently had a heart attack in the hospital.

Investigators were looking for any information about Johnson's activities in the 24 hours before his death.
