Rick Adam Youngblood of Florence, the 54-year-old man who was involved in an altercation at the Occupy Eugene camp on December 19, has died according to the Eugene Police Department (EPD).

The exact cause of death is pending and the incident remains under investigation by Eugene Police detectives and the District Attorney's office.

"There is a possibility there will not be a prosecution," said Eugene Police Chief Pete Kerns today in a briefing. [Listen to audio from the briefing here.]

Occupy Eugene is holding a candlelight vigil in memory of Rick Adam Youngblood and other victims of street violence at 6:30pm today, December 23, at the Morse Free Speech Plaza.

"[We are] extremely saddened by the news of the death of Rick Adam Youngblood…the unfortunate and hidden truth about homelessness is that it can be violent and dangerous, as we saw in the microcosm of street life that sprung up at Occupy Eugene," said Occupy Eugene in a statement. '"We thank members of our community, and Eugene police who did their best to tend to his injuries, and we send our condolences to Mr. Youngblood's relatives and friends."

Today the decampment of the Occupy Eugene (OE) continues as the result of the City Council's decision on December 20 to revoke the group's public camping exemption.

Chief Kerns says "the numbers residing in the camp have reduced significantly" since the Council's decision and that "40 or so are still sleeping there."

"We do not have a deadline [to close the camp], which can create confrontations with protesters," Kerns added.
