Rescuers have released the names of the two Fort Collins brothers caught in an avalanche near Steamboat Springs this weekend that killed one of them.

Tyler Lundstedt, 24, was killed in an avalanche near Buffalo Pass on late Saturday night or early Sunday morning said Mark White, a spokesman for Jackson County Search and Rescue. His brother, Jordan Lundstedt, 21, survived and built a snowcave.

White said the brothers had been snowmobiling with a larger group and broke off. They apparently got their snowmobiles stuck in the deep snow on Saturday and began walking out when they triggered the large avalanche, White said.

"The best information that we have is that they were snowmobiling in the area, became stuck and tried to evacuate on foot," White said. "When they were involved in the avalanche, they probably lost a good part of their equipment."

White said rescuers got a 911 call on Sunday afternoon from friends of Jordan Lundstedt, who had texted them for help. Cell phone reception in the area is poor.

White said rescuers who numbered about 40 were able to pinpoint Jordan Lundstedt's location through his cell phone but weren't able to reach him until Monday evening despite using helicopters, skis, snowmobiles and snowshoes.

"It was just that difficult and that dangerous to get to him," White said. "I can't say any less: the searchers put their own lives at risk to save this young man."

White said the Lundstedt's father, Gary, was the first searcher to reach the snowcave where Jordan Lundstedt had taken shelter. He said rescuers were able to retrieve Jordan Lundstedt about 6 p.m. on Monday, and he was then flown by helicopter to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley as a precaution.

"He had some injuries that were potentially difficult, including potential frostbite," White said.

Buffalo Pass is a popular backcountry area on the west side of the North Fork Valley. The pass road, which offers access to Steamboat Springs, is closed to cars in the winter.
