Authorities have named two people killed in a crash Monday afternoon, when police said the driver of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo carrying four people ran a red light, hit another vehicle and careened into a drainage ditch.

Wayne Kevin Dutra, 35, and Julie Ann Frary, 36 -- both of Fremont -- were pronounced dead at the scene in the city's Grimmer neighborhood, an Alameda County Coroner's Bureau official said.

Another man and woman in the vehicle, both 30, remain in critical condition at a hospital, police said.

The incident began about 1:30 p.m., when an officer began following the Monte Carlo, which he deemed suspicious, Officer John Flynn said.

The vehicle's driver made several quick turns to avoid the officer and then drove at a high rate of speed while eastbound on Delaware Street, police said.

The driver ran a red light at Fremont Boulevard and was struck by a 1999 Dodge Durango, which then hit a 2004 Ford pickup that had been stopped in the northbound left-turn lane, authorities said.

The Durango's driver, a 42-year-old Fremont man, suffered minor injuries, while the Ford's two occupants -- San Jose men ages 61 and 21 -- were not injured, Flynn said.

Anyone with information about the accident may call police Officer Jacob Shannon at 510-790-6765.
