The Colorado State Patrol said a teenage girl died after she jumped out of a moving car driven by her mother and into the path of a car driven by another teen.

Catrina Fox,17, of Bailey, intentionally opened the door and jumped out of the car as it was moving, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis.

The incident occurred at about 1 a.m. as Fox was riding in the passenger side of a car driven by her mother, traveling westbound on Highway 285 near Kipling, according to the Denver Post.

After Fox jumped out of the car into moving traffic, she was hit by a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by a 17-year-old boy, from Littleton.

The driver of the PT Cruiser and his passengers were uninjured, said Lewis.

Investigators did not believe that alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident No charges have been filed against the 17-year-old boy, said Lewis.

Highway 285 was closed during the investigation but was reopened around 3 a.m.
