Lee County deputies are investigating a fatal drive-by shooting that happened in the area of Orange River Boulevard and Ottuwma Avenue in Fort Myers Sunday around 5 p.m.

The victim of the shooting was identified as 17-year-old Jose Pineiro.

Deputies say Pineiro was driving a PT cruiser when a green Dodge Intrepid or Dodge Stratus pulled up alongside his car and shot him.

A bystander performed CPR on Pineiro. He later died at Lee Memorial Hospital.

None of Pineiro's passengers were injured.

James Davis' children heard were outside playing when the shooting happened.

"They were big caliber, heard about two or three shots. Kids heard it and said, 'Daddy we heard shots,'" said Davis.

Davis said the neighborhood is usually quiet.

"Normally it is so peaceful. We are out here in the evening and the neighbors - everyone gets along fine," said Davis.

Resident Tom Heimer hopes the shooting will bring neighbors together to watch out for each other.

"I think stuff like this kind of sets everyone to band together a little bit, kind of keep an eye out on anything - and see if they see something going on that shouldn't be," said Heimer.
