Singer Leslie Carter, the sister of US pop stars Nick and Aaron Carter, has died aged 25.

A publicist confirmed Carter, who has a 10-month-old daughter with husband Mike Ashton, died in upstate New York but did not provide details of how or where she died.

Sources said Carter was battling an addiction to prescription drugs and her family members believe she may have died as the result of an overdose, TMZ reports.

They said she had recently moved from Canada to Upstate New York to stay with her family while she tried to kick her addiction.

Carter's family released a statement saying they were grieving and requested "the utmost privacy".

"We are deeply saddened for the loss of our beloved sister, daughter, and granddaughter Leslie Carter," the family told Access Hollywood.

Aaron Carter, posted a message on her Facebook page saying: "Hey this is aaron we are going to keep her facebook up…! I will add ppl so we keep leslie alive! We love les."

He also wrote: "RIP MY DEAREST SISTER…! I LOVE U AND YOU THE ONE THAT ALWAYS ROCKS. LOVE AARON UR LIL BRO U CALL LLAC."

Leslie appeared in all eight episodes of the reality show House of Carters in 2006 and her single Like Wow was on the soundtrack of the movie Shrek in 2001.

Her brother Nick, 32, was the first to experience fame in the late 1990s as a singer in boy band the Backstreet Boys.

Aaron followed soon after with the hit single Crush on You, released in 1997.
