One teen was killed and another was taken to a local hospital after a boating incident at Stonewall Jackson Lake in Lewis County over the weekend.

Rescue crews were called to the marina near Stonewall Resort about 4 p.m. Saturday after witnesses called for help. According to WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, witnesses told authorities the two teens, a boy and a girl, were in the lake when the boat apparently had an electrical malfunction and shocked the two.

The girl, who has not been identified, was retrieved from the water and taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital with unknown injuries. The boy, identified as Michael Cunningham, 15, of Bridgeport, was pulled from the lake at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials with the Division of Natural Resources told the media that the boy died from drowning but would not provide any further details on the cause of death. The teen's body was transported to the state Medical Examiner's office in Charleston for an autopsy.

Family and friends of Cunningham told WBOY-TV that Cunningham was a sophomore at Bridgeport High School and that he had been active in band and student council.

Dive teams from Buckhannon, Belington, Philippi, Walkersville and Weston participated in the search along with State Police, Lewis County Sheriff's deputies and crews from the Army Corps of Engineers.

Authorities still are investigating.
