The Placerville man suspected of shooting his step-father remains in the hospital, El Dorado County sheriff's officials confirmed.

Sheriff's Lt. Bryan Golmitz told the Mountain Democrat that the suspect in Sunday's shooting suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and as of Monday morning, was still receiving treatment at an area hospital.

He is expected to survive, said Golmitz.

On Monday, authorities released the identity of the suspected shooter.

Richard Petroski, 48, is suspected of fatally shooting his step-father, 69-year-old John Gale Malia.

On Sunday morning, deputies responded to a reported shooting at 3578 Deer Canyon Road in Placerville, roughly three miles away from Newtown Road.

The reporting party purportedly told deputies that Petroski shot Malia before turning the gun on himself.

Deputies arrived at the scene and located Malia, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head but was still alive.

Malia was treated by medics and was taken to Marshall Hospital, but died sometime after.
Deputies continued to search the property, which had multiple outbuildings and trailers. While deputies were investigating a trailer, Petroski, already with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, reportedly surrendered himself and was taken to a Sacramento area hospital shortly after 10 a.m.

According to sheriff's officials, Malia and Petroski lived together on the property and had an ongoing, unspecified disagreement that led to the alleged attack.
