A Murfreesboro man is coping with the death of his wife after a crash on Interstate 24 Sunday morning.

Around 5 a.m., Casey Swett and his wife, Rachel, were heading home when he lost control of his car and plowed through a fence near the New Salem exit.

Tennessee Highway Patrol officials said the couple wasn't wearing seatbelts and were thrown out of the vehicle. Rachel died at the scene, and Casey was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

THP investigators believe the couple had been drinking. Both were tested for alcohol.

Casey and Rachel Swett were high school sweethearts who celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in January. They just recently bought a new house and got a new puppy, according to family members.

Casey Swett was later treated and released from the hospital Sunday. THP officials say charges are pending.

This is the second fatal crash in Rutherford County in about a week where alcohol played a factor, according to authorities. Amanda Odom and her 2-year-old daughter died after being thrown from a vehicle driven by her boyfriend, Christopher Goins. Goins only suffered minor injuries and could face charges.
