A Charlotte mother has been charged with murder in the May 5 death of her daughter, 25-year-old Brittini Ward.
Police on Wednesday arrested Dawn Michelle Ward, 48, at her parents' home in Lexington County, S.C. She was charged with murder and waived extradition.
Also charged with Brittini's murder is 24-year-old Derek Ward, the victim's cousin. Police arrested Derek Ward May 25. They also charged him with raping the victim.
In addition to the murder charge, police on Wednesday also charged Dawn Ward with incest with Derek Ward, her nephew. She was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.
Police so far have released few details of the killing.
On May 5, paramedics and police were dispatched on a medical call to an apartment in the 8100 block of Providence Court Lane in south Charlotte. Upon arrival, they found Brittini Ward inside. Emergency personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police have not released a cause of death.
As the investigation continued, homicide detectives were contacted by "extended family members from out of state with new information regarding the case," according to a police report. That information led to Derek Ward's arrest. Police said he and Brittini lived at the same address.
Derek Ward and his aunt, Dawn Ward, are both being held in the Mecklenburg jail.
