The driver of a minivan that crashed in New Zealand in May, killing a Manalapan college student and two classmates, had his license suspended after pleading guilty to several counts of careless driving, New Zealand court officials said.

Daniela Rosanna Lekhno, 20, a junior at Boston University from Manalapan, died at the scene, police said. At the time of the accident on May 12, she was one of seven exchange students en route to a hiking trip near Turangi, officials said.

The minivan in which students were riding went out of control and rolled over, killing three passengers and injuring four, officials said.
The driver of the minivan was also a Boston University student, Stephen Houseman, of Massapequa, N.Y., officials said.

On Tuesday, Houseman, 20, pleaded guilty in Auckland District Court to three counts of careless driving causing death, and four counts of careless driving causing injury, a court spokesman told The Star-Ledger last night.

Houseman will not face jail time. His driver's license will be suspended for six months, and he is ordered to pay about $100 U.S. in court fees, the spokesman said.

"From a court perspective, this case is concluded," the spokesman said.
