One man died and another man is in critical condition after a single car accident in Moreau on Sunday.

The accident happened at 12:05 p.m. on Interstate 87, north of Exit 17. Traffic was backed up for several hours while authorities cleaned up the scene.

Witnesses say that a 2007 KIA Spectra was traveling in the left lane at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway into the median, becoming airborne and striking a large tree.

The operator of the vehicle was identified as 36-year-old Michael T. Romanowski, of Saratoga Springs. Romanowski was pronounced dead at the scene due to massive trauma.

The passenger in the vehicle was identified as 24-year-old Andrew S. Casper, of Saratoga Springs. Casper was med-flighted to Albany Medical Center where he is currently in critical condition.

The State Police were assisted at the scene by Wilton EMS and South Glens Falls Fire Department.
