Family members of Bill and Kathy Wilson said they are devastated by the attack against the couple.

The couple were shot in their car as they were arriving home early Wednesday morning.

The couple's adult son, Jeffrey Wilson, 28, was arrested in connection with his mother's slaying. His father was severely injured after being shot several times and is in a coma.

"You don't think this is going to happen to your family," said the couple's niece, Elizabeth Gentry. "It's like a lifetime movie that you watch on TV."

Gentry said her cousin, Jeffrey Wilson, had a good head on his shoulder, and had a job and two children.

But he had also started using drugs, Gentry said.

"I think everything accelerated in the past year," she said. "It's just amazing how things change because of a situation."

Gentry said her aunt told her that Jeffrey's attitude had changed.

"There were a lot of arguments," Gentry said. "But Bill and Kathy looked past them because they loved their son. … My aunt Kathy was such a wonderful lady. She never wanted to let her kid fall to the bottom."

According to the arrest report, Jeffrey's girlfriend said he started using a lot of the drug meth over the last few weeks and that he became irrational and paranoid. She told police he thought his parent were trying to poison him.

Those symptoms of meth use are typical, said David Marlon, president of Solutions Recovery, a drug rehabilitation center.

"It happens almost from the first hit," Marlon said. "Hearing voices … seeing things that aren't there and … are afraid."

Gentry said she doesn't want this type tragedy to happen to another family because it can be avoided.

"Trust your gut, pay attention to what's happening with these people and don't dismiss it," she said. "You cant ignore it because it could escalate to a point of no return."

Bill Wilson is in an induced coma right now to help him heal. His family said they are praying for the best.

As for Jeffrey Wilson, he is facing a count of murder with a deadly weapon and a count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

He is expected in court Monday.
