A baby was rescued from a fiery crash that killed two people along U.S. 231 Monday afternoon.

According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Randy Martin was notified of a reckless driver in a Buick LeSabre on U.S. 231. Seconds before he could intercept the vehicle, the LaSabre was involved in multi-injury crash in the 9500 block of U.S. 231, about two miles north of Romney around 1:45 p.m.

Two witnesses at the scene told NewsChannel 18 that a woman traveling south on U.S. 231 was driving her Buick LeSabre erratically when she hit a Dodge Stratus traveling north head-on. The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office said the Stratus was driven by Jennifer York, 28, of Lafayette. The LeSabre caught fire shortly after the wreck. Deputy Martin along with the assistance of two motorists tried to contain the fire, that's when Deputy Martin broke through the rear window and pulled out a seven month old boy from the car and handed him off to a fellow rescuer. Due to the extensive damage of vehicle Deputy Martin was unable to remove the driver. The female driver of the LeSabre was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is not being released until she can be identified by the Tippecanoe County Coroner.

Deputies said York was airlifted from the crash to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis where she was pronounced dead.

A third car, a Chevy Malibu, while attempting to avoid the wreck, hit the Stratus. The driver and passenger in the Malibu were treated on the scene for minor injuries and refused further medical treatment.

U.S. 231 was closed for nearly three hours and reopened shortly before 5 p.m.
