A Quakertown man was killed and a woman hurt in a vehicle crash on Route 309 in Hatfield Township Thursday morning.

Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Walter Hofman has identified the man killed as Nathaniel Rocque, 25, of Quakertown. Hofman said Thursday afternoon that Rocque died at the scene from injuries suffered in the accident, the cause of which is still under investigation.

According to Hatfield Township Police, the accident took place around 8:50 a.m. on 309 between Advance Lane and Trewigtown Road. A portion of 309 was closed until 1 p.m. while police, fire and medical units worked at the scene.

Police said Rocque, the driver of a red Toyota Corolla heading northbound on 309, drifted for some reason into the inside southbound lane, where his car was hit head-on by a silver Subaru Forester heading southbound.

The woman driving the Subaru was removed from the car by firefighters from the Hatfield, Hilltown and Colmar fire companies working with Volunteer Medical Service Corps personnel.

The Subaru driver was then flown to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment of unknown injuries by a PennStar medical helicopter that landed on the closed portion of 309.

As she was rescued, police placed pieces of the Subaru's roof and doors on the grassy curb in front of U-Haul Self Storage and Bergey's Chevrolet near the accident scene. Both cars came to rest facing south after the accident, the SUV in the southbound lane and the Toyota in the center turn lane, with debris from both scattered across three lanes of roadway.

A third driver of a gold Kia SUV involved in the accident was not hurt, according to police.

Police said the initial dispatch for the accident was reported at 8:53 a.m. and 309 was closed shortly after. The medical helicopter landed on 309 shortly before 9:30 a.m. to receive the female driver of the Subaru.

Shortly after, police draped a yellow tarpaulin around a red tarp covering the red Toyota, as officials from the Montgomery County Coroner's Office removed Rocque's body and transported him from the scene.
