Robertson, 31, of 3527 Hoyt, Lot 71, Mona Lake Mobile Home Park, died at the scene of the accident that occurred around 6:45 a.m.

The drivers that struck Robertson could not avoid him, police said, and it was unclear whether Robertson wandered into the roadway or was attempting to cross Seaway Drive when he was struck.

Authorities say they do not believe Robertson was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. An autopsy was planned for later Wednesday.

Robertson had been walking to his job at Buffalo Wild Wings, 5648 S. Harvey, Fruitport Township, where he worked as a cook, said Muskegon Heights Police Sgt. Shawn Stefanich.

Stefanich said the staff at his workplace was "devastated" to hear the news and said Robertson was "an all-around great guy."

Jamison Rike, general manager for the restaurant, wept when describing how Robertson's loss is affecting his staff.

"He will be a great loss to the community. It's hard to put any thoughts into words. He was a long-term team member for many years. The devastation we feel...," Rike said, overcome with emotion. "We will miss him. He was just a happy person. Words can't express what he meant to us here."

Stefanich said Robertson walked to work so his wife could use the family vehicle. The distance from his home to the restaurant is about four miles.

Just how the accident occurred wasn't immediately clear, but Robertson had been wearing dark clothing and it was dark outside at the time of the accident, police said.

Stefanich said Robertson was struck twice while he was in the traffic lane — first by a black Pontiac Grand Prix and second by a white Nissan sport utility vehicle.

Both drivers involved stopped and pulled to the side of the road, Stefanich said. Several people also traveling that route witnessed the accident, Stefanich said.

"Traffic was really, really heavy," he said.

Stefanich said the first driver who struck Robertson will go through a routine blood-alcohol check. Testing the second driver is unnecessary because the victim had already been struck.

Norton Shores police and fire personnel assisted at the scene.
