Authorities have confirmed that the body of a man found washed up Tuesday on Santa Cruz Island was a camper reported missing the day before.

Christopher Anthony Mondiek, 23, of Ohio was found dead about 8 a.m. on a beach by rescue personnel.

Officials believe he might have fallen off a cliff and died.

Rescue crews from Ventura and Santa Barbara counties brought the body to the Ventura Harbor, said Sgt. Mark Williams, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said Mondiek was due back on the mainland several days ago and that his vehicle was still parked at the Ventura Harbor. He had gone to Santa Cruz Island aboard an Island Packers boat.

The search was complicated Monday by stormy weather, officials said.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation, and coroner officials will determine an exact cause of the death. An initial investigation, however, suggests the death was accidental.
