A Newbury Park man was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs Tuesday after his vehicle collided head-on with a second vehicle, killing a passenger who was riding with him, Thousand Oaks police said.

Police said Alejandro Pope, 19, was driving north on Reino Road about 9:30 a.m. when his vehicle inexplicably crossed into the southbound lanes hitting another vehicle.

Nicholas Cwayna, 23, who was riding with Pope, was pronounced dead at Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, authorities said.

The collision caused major damage to the front parts of both vehicles, authorities said.

All of the occupants in both vehicles were taken to Los Robles, authorities said. They include a Camarillo woman and a 2-month-old infant, who was in his car seat and not injured, authorities said.

Pope is accused of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated and causing injury, authorities said.

He was taken to Ventura County jail, where he was being held Tuesday night on bail of $500,000, according to authorities.

Thousand Oaks police said they are continuing to investigate the collision and are asking anyone with information on it to contact them at 494-8271.
