A Trenton man was shot and killed late Monday when the parked car he was sitting in on the 500 block of Lalor Street was surrounded by a group of men, who opened fire, police said.

Jerel Grimsley, 21, was shot in the torso at 11:59 p.m. near his home in the city's South Ward.

He was pronounced dead at Capital Health Regional Medical Center this morning, said Sgt. Stephen Varn.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, Varn said. Grimsley was sitting in a car with several others when they were approached by the group of men, who began questioning the occupants, Varn said.

As the driver of the car tried to pull away, at least one of the men opened fire, Varn said.

Grimsley was shot in the torso, Varn said.

The car continued toward St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, but stopped on Roebling Avenue to seek help from police, Varn said.

An ambulance took Grimsley to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Varn said.
