BURLINGTON Halton police have released more details about the man struck and killed by a westbound Via Rail train.

The man has been identified as a 23-year-old from Hamilton.

Police are not releasing his name at the request of his family.

No foul play is suspected.

Police say he was hit about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, just east of the Burlington GO station. He was seen walking onto the CN tracks, west of Cumberland Avenue.

Police say he was seen approaching from the south side of the tracks and crossed two sets before walking into the path of a westbound Via passenger train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The train was carrying more than 180 passengers and crew.

A westbound GO train, travelling a short distance behind the Via train on another track, was not involved in the collision, but was delayed by it.

The Halton police collision reconstruction unit investigated the fatality. The tracks were closed for about two hours for the investigation.

No foul play is suspected.

Police say no one on either train was injured in the incident.

GO Transit reported a service disruption of two-and-a-half hours for trains headed to and from Union Station on its Lakeshore West service.

Train service for most of the evening originated and terminated at Appleby station; buses were taking passengers between Hamilton, Aldershot, Burlington and Appleby stations.

Two Via trains were delayed because of the incident, one headed from Union Station to Windsor and another, known as The Maple Leaf, from New York City to Union.
