A driver was killed and his passenger injured Saturday night after his car ran off the interstate in Slidell and hit a sign post, state police said.
Curtis Cameron, 28, of Hattiesburg, Miss., died on the scene, and police suspect alcohol use was a factor in the crash, said state police spokesman Nick Manale.
Katrina Cameron, 28, of Hattiesburg, was first transported to Ochsner Northshore Medical Center with severe injuries and later airlifted to a New Orleans hospital for further medical treatment.
The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 10, about half a mile south of junction of interstates 10, 12, and 59 in St. Tammany Parish.
Police believe Curtis Cameron was driving a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis east on Interstate 10 when, for unknown reasons, it drifted off the left side of the roadway into the grassy median. The Mercury hit a sign post with its front left side. After impact, the vehicle came to rest in the median between the I-10 eastbound guardrail and the sign post, Manale said.
Manale said Curtis Cameron was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office. Katrina Cameron was wearing a seatbelt.
"Alcohol use is suspected," Manale said in a news release. A blood sample was submitted to the St. Tammany Coroner's Office for analysis.
