Family and friends of a woman shot and killed in Clarksville Monday say she worked hard to support her five children.

Police and her family and friends believe a relationship that developed where she worked led to her death.

They say Lisa McQuirt met her accused killer at the strip club where she worked.

"If he so-called loved her, why would he do that? Why can't people just talk? Why do you have to go up to somebody and kill them and take them away from family and kids? I don't understand," said Tina Smith, McQuirt's friend.

It's the question McQuirt's friends and family may never be able to answer.

Police say 44-year-old Ronald Shewmaker of Harrison County, shot McQuirt at a Clarksville home just before 5 a.m. Monday.

They believe Shewmaker followed McQuirt to a friend's home on Kenwood Avenue, for what would be the end of several weeks of stalking.

"The male subject inside answered. He knew this person, our suspect Ronald Shewmaker. He told our victim he was out there. She went out there to talk to him, and that's all we know. The next thing you know, she was coming in the side door where she had been shot," said Clarksville police Maj. Darrell Rayborn.

McQuirt died at University Hospital in Louisville. She was 32 years old.

Officers later arrested Shewmaker at his home in Harrison County, Indiana. They recovered the handgun they believe was used in the killing. He's now charged with murder.

"He broke down a pretty-decent-sized family," Smith said.

Smith said McQuirt met Shewmaker at least three months ago at the Bottoms Up strip club, where she worked in Louisville.

Smith and Shewmaker's father tell WDRB News the couple began dating, and Shewmaker bought McQuirt the Dodge Charger found at the crime scene with its tires flattened.

Smith and other relatives say Shewmaker had broken windows and previously slashed the tires.

"He wanted her all (to) himself, you know? He didn't want her at the club dancing in front of anybody else and was jealous and all that and one thing led to another," Smith said.

McQuirt leaves behind her mother, a husband in the Floyd County jail and the five children.

The family has set up a fund at Your Community Bank.

Shewmaker was due to appear in court on Tuesday.
