A 24-year-old man was killed Tuesday night in Ventura's west end in what police say was a gang-related shooting.
Leonard Lopez, of Ventura, died at Ventura County Medical Center after the shooting about 9:40 p.m. near the corner of East Ramona Street and North Ventura Avenue.
Investigators said Lopez was walking when a dark SUV carrying four people stopped near him. One person in the vehicle got out and shot Lopez several times in the torso, officials said.
The gunman got back into the SUV and left the area. The SUV was last seen going east on Ramona, police said.
No arrests had been made as of late Wednesday. Investigators were looking for a roughly 5-foot-10-inch man in his early 20s wearing dark shorts and a white T-shirt.
The incident was originally reported as a drive-by shooting, and police initially issued an alert for a large, two-toned vehicle that had left the scene.
Police Cmdr. Darin Schindler said the people in the SUV were possibly gang-affiliated and that Lopez was known to be gang-affiliated and known to police.
Court records indicate Lopez was convicted of the sale, transportation or offering to sell a controlled substance in August 2010. In that same case, a street terrorism charge was dismissed.
Later Tuesday, about 11:10 p.m., Oxnard police responded to a gang-related shooting in the 200 block of Campbell Way. A 16-year-old suffered an injury that was not life-threatening, police said.
Schindler said the two incidents did not appear related but that Ventura police were talking with Oxnard police to "check on that possibility."
Oxnard police Sgt. Alex Arnett said they are sharing information with Ventura police.
"It's still in the very early stages of both investigations so we haven't ruled it out, but we haven't been able to confirm that (the shootings) are related," Arnett said.
He said other gang-related homicides have occurred in Oxnard and in neighboring El Rio this year and that authorities continue to share information.
Arnett said gangs retaliate against other gangs but that tracking the incidents is difficult because members often don't report them or cooperate with police.
Tuesday's shooting was the fifth homicide in Ventura this year and the second this month.
Zachary Lee was shot in the head Oct. 6 and later declared brain-dead at Ventura County Medical Center. That shooting was believed to be gang-related.
Schindler said Ventura police have seen more gang violence but that there was no indication that any of the homicides were related.
