A Hermitage, Tenn., man drowned late Saturday evening while canoeing with friends on the Buffalo River.
The body of Bradley C. Glover, 24, of the Nashville suburbs, was recovered from the river after 8 p.m. Saturday, Wayne County Sheriff Ric Wilson said.
Wilson said it took officers until Sunday to identify the body and notify the man's relatives.
He said the accident occurred about 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
"There was a female in the canoe with him, but they were in a large group," the sheriff said. "We were told that while canoeing, Glover would stop from time to time, get out of the canoe and crawl up the bluffs overlooking the river and jump off. Apparently, that was what he was doing this time."
Glover reached an area of the Buffalo River near the Wayne and Perry county line known as Pine Bluff, which deputies said is 50-55 feet tall.
"Witnesses said he got a running start and just jumped off the bluff," Wilson said. "From what we've been told, he hit the water face and belly first. He went down and never came back up."
The sheriff said Glover had jumped out off the bluff about 25 feet and landed in water 15 feet deep.
Wilson said after a search of the area, divers from Lawrence County were called in to recover the body.
"It took a couple of hours to get everyone there, but once they got there, they had the body recovered in about 15 to 20 minutes," Wilson said. "They really did a good job."
Wilson said there was no sign of foul play.
"The people Glover was with said they had been coming to the Buffalo River to canoe like this every year for a long time," Wilson said. "It's unfortunate that their trip ended like this.
It's a sad and very tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Glover's family."
Wilson said the drowning is the first this year in Wayne County.
