City police have arrested a 28-year-old city man for the fatal stabbing Tuesday of a mother of three inside her Sixth Avenue apartment.

Alexis Torres of 54 Fifth Ave., who had knife wounds himself after the domestic dispute turned fatal at 3:34 a.m. that day, was brought Friday from Albany Medical Center Hospital to the Rensselaer County Courthouse where he was indicted later in the afternoon by a grand jury on second-degree murder and other charges.

Amber Lynne Fernald, 33, was found stabbed to death inside her third-floor apartment at 93 Sixth Ave.

A witness said Fernald's three children ran out of the house screaming "mommy's on the ground." Officers arrived and kicked in the door and allegedly found Torres injured from stab wounds. Police are calling it a domestic incident.

Torres was brought into County Court for arraignment on a sealed indictment before Judge Andrew Ceresia but the public defender's office said Torres was still under the influence of medications from his hospital stay.

Ceresia opened the indictment but then postponed the arraignment until Tuesday because of Torres' condition as well as the need to have an Spanish language interpreter available. Torres was sent to the county jail without bail.

Besides a count of second-degree murder, the indictment charges Torres with aggravated criminal contempt for violating an order of protection meant to keep him away from Fernald and her three children, criminal possession of a weapon and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Capt. Daniel DeWolf said the charges were brought after exhaustive efforts by the detectives, evidence technicians and the district attorney's office.

Meanwhile, services for Fernald are set for 7 p.m. Monday at the W. J. Lyons Funeral Home in Rensselaer with calling hours starting at 4 p.m., the funeral home said.

Fernald was born in Albany and had lived in Lansingburgh for the past 10 years, according to the funeral notice. She worked at the mortgage department of M&T Bank in Clifton Park and had also worked at Trustco Bank.
