A 12-year-old Catasauqua boy died this morning, hours after falling off his bike Sunday evening and hitting his head on the pavement.
Sage Stauffer, of the 900 block of Bridge Street, was riding his bike at the basketball courts in the 500 block of American Street in Catasauqua about 6:45 p.m. when he fell and hit his head, according to a news release from the Lehigh County Coroner's office.
He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead at 5 o'clock this morning. His death was attributed to severe head injuries and was ruled an accident.
Coroner Scott Grim said the boy wasn't wearing a helmet.
"He was coming down the hill, lost control and went over the handlebars onto the basketball court and hit his head," Grim said.
Mayor Barbara A. Schlegel this morning said she had yet to speak with investigating police officers; police Chief Douglas Kish wasn't available for comment.
Schlegel said the borough of 6,200 undoubtedly will be reeling from the tragedy.
"What do you tell the kids?" asked Schlegel, adding she knows the Stauffer family as patrons of her dry-cleaning business. "They think they're invincible. I can't imagine as a parent ..."
The accident happened a little more than a week before the Sept. 7 start of school in the Catasauqua Area School District.
"This is the first time in five years (as mayor) that I've had to face something like this," Schlegel said a couple of hours after receiving the news. "I don't know what I'm going to say. I'm just speechless."
Schlegel said the accident happened on the basketball courts at the borough park, where bicycles are prohibited.
