A mother was shot dead by her 2-year-old son inside of an Idaho Walmart when the toddler apparently reached into her purse and discharged her gun, authorities said.
Veronica Rutledge, 29, had her son seated in a shopping cart while with family Tuesday when surveillance video captured the boy getting a hold of the firearm, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said.
A preliminary investigation into the shooting around 11:15 a.m. in Hayden has described it as "accidental."
Rutledge, from Blackfoot, Idaho, did have a concealed weapons permit, deputies said at a press conference.
She was in the area visiting family for the holidays when the senseless tragedy occurred, according to local reports.
The Walmart has since closed and has announced plans to reopen Wednesday morning.
