A 19-year-old Magalia woman was identified by the California Highway Patrol as the victim who died in an accident Friday on the Skyway between Chico and Paradise.

Brianna May Cassidy, 19, was killed after the Honda Civic she was driving was struck head-on by a Toyota T-100 truck driven by William Sanford, 21, of Proberta.

Sanford suffered major injuries and was sent to Enloe Medical Center.

A CHP spokesman said Monday that while officers are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor, there was nothing on scene that was obvious to them to indicate the presence of either one.

The spokesman also said it's standard to investigate whether drugs or alcohol were a factor. Investigators will also be talking to witnesses to see if Sanford was falling asleep while driving and will pull phone records to see if he was on the phone.

The spokesman said Sanford's truck will be inspected for any potential mechanical failures that may have contributed to the accident.

Officer Adriana Warner said on Friday that Sanford was traveling on Skyway toward Paradise when for an unknown reason he lost control and the Toyota went up the embankment, launching him into oncoming traffic that was traveling toward Chico.

The pickup landed on Cassidy's sedan, compacting the sedan's cab and trapping her in the vehicle.

Warner said that prior to the accident, CHP dispatch received a call regarding a reckless driver, but it's unknown if the two are related.
