A Macomb County man is facing a murder charge after investigators said he fatally shot his friend with a handgun that he had taken away from him in Fraser earlier this week.

Matthew Magdowski, 31, of Clinton Township, was arraigned today on charges of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was ordered held in the Macomb County Jail on $200,000 bond after arraignment in 39th District Court in Roseville.

He is accused of killing Joseph Saroli, 33, of Macomb Township, who died Tuesday, a day after he was shot in a home in the 18000 block of Woodbine, authorities said. Magdowski told police he shot Saroli after he took away a handgun from him that the victim had pulled out of a drawer.

They said Magdowski was arrested at the scene, and the gun was recovered after the shooting Monday evening.

Saroli was found on the floor of the residence with a wound in his hip area, Fraser Public Safety Detective Lt. Dan Kolke said. Magdowski admitted to police he shot Saroli, who was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Magdowski and the Fraser homeowner, who did not know each other, told authorities that Saroli went into a drawer in the kitchen and pulled out the .380 semi-automatic. Kolke said police do not know why Saroli, who was friends with the homeowner, got the gun.

Saroli pointed the gun and racked it, ejecting two live rounds, authorities said.

Kolke said Magdowski told police that Saroli pointed the gun at him and he felt afraid and grabbed it. Police said Magdowski then aimed the gun at Saroli and fired one round, hitting him.

Magdowski said he did not know why he pulled the trigger, Kolke said.

Authorities said the homeowner had yelled that the gun was loaded.

Police are continuing to investigate. No additional charges have been filed, Kolke said.

A probable cause conference for Magdowski is set for Jan. 21 and a preliminary exam is set for Jan. 28. He requested a court-appointed attorney, according to the court.
