A 45-year-old Twinsburg woman is dead after the motorcycle she was riding crashed Sunday evening in Akron.
Richelle Campbell of Flagstone Drive was involved in a crash with two other motorcycles during a memorial run that came through Akron shortly before 8 p.m., said Capt. Dan Zampelli of the Akron Police Department.
Campbell was ejected from the 2008 blue and silver Suzuki and slid under a tractor-trailer on Interstate 76 near Grant Street.
Campbell was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Two other motorcyclists were also transported to local hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Zampelli said he was unsure what the ride was memorializing, but 50-60 motorcycles participated in the run.
"The ironic thing is, we heard they were memorializing two people who had died in motorcycle crashes," Zampelli said.
The accident closed all eastbound lanes of I-76 for a period of time, he said.
Officers investigating the accident were preparing to open all the lanes about 9 p.m. when a woman drove through the area and almost hit a police cruiser and an officer.
As she swerved to miss the officer, she hit numerous other vehicles, causing authorities to close the highway again.
The woman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, Zampelli said.
The road reopened at 10:45 p.m.
