Derek Ryan Donald Lucas was a beloved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and uncle.

He was born April 6, 1995 in Rochester, MN where he spent his entire life. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church, and was a graduate of Mayo High School.

Derek was known for having an incredibly positive outlook on life, and was excited to soon be pursuing his dream of joining the Marine Corps.

He was taken from this life far too soon in a motor vehicle accident on January 30, 2016.

Derek is survived by his father David Lucas, mother Lynn Lucas, brother Austin Lucas (all of Rochester), and sister Kristy (Luke) Christenson of Prior Lake, MN along with his nieces and nephew (Isabel, Josiah, and Jenica Christenson). He is also survived by aunts Deidra (Dave) Henslin of Rochester, Diana (Dana) Erickson of St. Anthony, MN, Tina Kuhlmann of Rochester, uncle August (Henriett) Varwig of Robbinsdale, MN, and grandmother Gloria (Rick) Amundrud of Fairdale, ND. His many surviving cousins are: Lucas Kuhlmann (Winona, MN), Andrew Kuhlmann (Rochester), Lauren Kuhlmann (Rochester), August Ruether (Blaine, MN), Michelle Henslin (along with daughter Braelynn) of Rochester, Kevin Henslin (Rochester), Brian Erickson (Maplewood, MN), Kyle Erickson (Atlanta, GA), and Kimberly (Dean) Johnson (along with children Claire and Allison) of Circle Pines, MN.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Donald and LaDon Lucas, maternal grandfather August Varwig Sr., uncle David Kuhlmann, cousin Michael Henslin, and niece Abigaile Christenson.

Derek will be remembered and missed by his many family and friends until we meet him again in heaven.

A prayer service will be held at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home at 4:00pm on Friday, February 12th, 2016 with a visitation to follow until 8:00pm.
