A 17-year-old Colleton County female and a 29-year-old man were killed

when they were they were stuck by a motor vehicle Saturday evening.

According to the preliminary report from the South Carolina Highway

Patrol, the two pedestrians were in the roadway on Jefferies Highway,

just outside the Walterboro city limits Saturday at approximately 9:50

p.m. when they were struck by a van traveling south on Jefferies

Highway.

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey reports that Casey Parrott, 17,

of 30 Jones Swamp Road, Walterboro, was pronounced dead at the

Emergency Department of Colleton Medical Center Saturday at 10:56 p.m.

A head injury has been listed as the cause of death.

Marshall Catterton Jr., 28, of 4608 Charleston Highway, Walterboro, was

pronounced dead at the Trauma Center of the Medical University of

South Carolina in Charleston Sunday at 4:08 a.m. Harvey said the cause

of death is listed as multiple trauma.

Parrott and Catteron were traveling north on Jefferies Highway,

near Honey Lane, when their pick-up truck struck and killed a deer.

They exited their truck and were removing the deer from the southbound

lanes when they were struck by the van.

Several other motorists stopped to assist the victims and contact the

emergency dispatch center.

A Dorchester County EMS ambulance, returning to Dorchester after

dropping off a patient at Colleton Medical Center, was flagged down by

the people at the scene and paramedics from that ambulance began

rendering care to the two injured people.

Colleton County Fire-Rescue ambulances arrived a few minutes later and

joined in the treatment.

Parrott, a recent graduate from Colleton County High School, was in

cardiac arrest at the crash site.

Firefighter-Paramedics began resuscitative efforts, then rapidly

transported her to Colleton Medical Center.

Catterton was also in cardiac arrest. The Dorchester paramedics began

resuscitative efforts and were able to get his heart beating.

A Colleton County firefighter drove the Dorchester EMS Unit to

Colleton County Medical Center so both Dorchester County paramedics

could continue working on Catterton as they transported him to

hospital.

Medical personnel at the Emergency Department stabilized him before

he was flown by medical emergency helicopter to the MUSC Trauma Center.

Traffic on Jefferies Highway was down to one lane for three hours

while the highway patrol investigated. Fire-Rescue provided scene

lighting for the troopers.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation of the

fatal accident.
