Four people have been killed in a collision between a train and a car in Stoddard County, Mo.

The crash happened on County Road 732 about 1 mile south of Dexter near Highway 25.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Maura Peters, 19, of Dexter, was traveling west on County Road 732, about a mile south of Dexter, when the vehicle came to a railroad crossing.

In the car with Peters was Hailey Laws, 20, and Vidalia Mace, 19, both of Bloomfield, and two children under the age of 2 - a 1-year-old Bloomfield, and a child under the age of 1 from Dexter.

Officials say Peters failed to yield and drove into the path of an oncoming train. Peters, Laws and one of the children were pronounced dead at at the scene. The other child was taken to Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett, Mo., where they were later pronounced dead.

Mace was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau for treatment of serious injuries.

Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Heffner said multiple agencies responded.

There is no crossing bar at the intersection, but it is labeled as a railroad crossing.
