The two men Clovis police found dead early Thursday morning may have been responsible for the deaths of each other, Police Chief Doug Ford said.
"That's a possibility," Ford said. "We still have additional witnesses to interview before we come to any conclusions."
The bodies of David Lopez, 43, and Carlos Gallegos, 25, were found about 4:15 a.m. Thursday after police received a report of a man being shot in the back.
Police said Lopez was found shot to death in an apartment building in the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Gallegos' body was found in a vehicle several blocks away. He had been stabbed, Ford said.
Officials were waiting on autopsies before concluding how each man died.
Ford said officials had no reason to believe a third person was involved in the incident, based on information available Thursday night.
Police Capt. Roman Romero said in a news release that first-responders found the man later identified as Lopez unresponsive on the floor in an apartment. They were unable to revive him.
In responding to the call of a shot fired, police saw a vehicle near the intersections of Aspen Street and MLK. The vehicle had "run off the road and had impacted a block fence," Romero said. The driver, later identified as Gallegos, was dead inside.
Officials initially said they were not sure the incidents were related, but Lt. Daron Roach of the CPD said on the scene that it was a working assumption. A news release late Thursday confirmed they were connected and the deaths related.
Roach said on the scene that a large gathering of military and first responders at the nearby Clovis Fire Department station was unrelated to the deaths. That group was working on a training exercise that had been planned weeks ago.
The homicides are the second and third in Clovis this year. The first occurred Feb. 13 when a 50-year-old man said he stabbed a 57-year-old at a home on West Fourth Street.
