A drug deal ending in murder is what police say brought them to the Lambeau Cottage parking lot at UW-Green Bay last month.
"We know that wasn't a random meeting," said Lt. Chad Ramos with the Green Bay Police Department.
Detectives discovered 39-year-old Krystal Torres Smith was meeting 26-year-old Percy Sims to sell him two ounces of marijuana. Instead, police say Sims killed her at close range, took her cell phone and her pot. The pot's street value is $200 to $300.
"We know that the came there together," said Ramos. "Why he chose to do what he did at that time, I don't know."
Police found Torres-Smith's body in her van at 2:30 in the morning on June 8. Shortly after, they tracked her cell phone, finding she had 14 recent contacts with Sims.
Three days later, on June 11, Sims was arrested at his home in Appleton on a parole warrant. Police found he had the victim's cell phone, a gun later identified as the murder weapon, and clothes with the victim's blood and DNA.
"In an interview, Sims finally admitted to killing Torres-Smith and that he was the only one involved," said Sims.
Court documents show Sims told a friend 'he was only going to rob her, but realized she knew too many of the same people that he knew.'
After Sims' initial court appearance, the victim's family explained what it's been like in the month since the murder.
"It's on your mind day and night and you go to bed at night and pray for the answers to come soon," said Brucelyn Benson, the victim's aunt.
"Detectives were pretty confident about it, but again, you have one shot at that, so they took the necessary time to make sure they put the right investigation together," said Ramos. "Now was that time."
Sims is being held on a $1 million cash bond.
Sims was released from prison in April 2014 for armed robbery with the threat of force in the Milwaukee area. He served six years of a twelve-year sentence.
