The body of a missing Grand Rapids woman was found Tuesday near Babbitt, more than 2 miles from where her vehicle was located in February.
Tawhna Jolee Pringle, 30, was last seen at about 10:30 p.m. Jan. 11 on a convenience store surveillance camera near Babbitt. Her ex-husband reported her missing Jan. 27 after she hadn't been seen or heard from for more than two weeks.
Loggers found Pringle's 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck Feb. 7 southeast of Babbitt in Lake County. The Lake County Sheriff's Department and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension conducted numerous searches of the area and found tracks leading away from the vehicle, but Pringle's body wasn't located.
Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson said a seventh search was organized Tuesday morning involving Pringle's friends and family members, law enforcement and search-and-rescue teams. The search teams included bloodhounds and cadaver dogs.
Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, friends and family members located Pringle's body about 100 feet from Dunka River Road, approximately 2.2 miles from where the truck was found.
Johnson said Pringle's truck ran out of gas where it was found stuck, and was apparently running for a while because snow underneath had melted. It was unclear how warm she was when she exited the vehicle and went for help. If she was relatively warm when she left her truck, Pringle could have made it up to 5 miles away from the vehicle, which made the search area fairly large, Johnson said.
Jan. 12 was a brutally cold day, with lows dipping to nearly 30 degrees below zero. Pringle, who showed signed signs of hypothermia, appeared to have died from exposure, Johnson said. An autopsy is scheduled to confirm those findings.
Johnson said foul play is not suspected.
