Thanksgiving day is usually a time where we come together and celebrate the things we are most thankful for. But for Bolton High School teacher, Ashley Scott (28yrs old), the day held something totally different. Little did she know that she would become Memphis, TN’s 145th Homicide this year.

According to investigators, the trouble started early Thanksgiving morning when the couple got into a heated argument, possibly over a text message Ashley Scott had received. The argument escalated to blows. Ashley Scott was allegedly forced to sleep in the garage where she later died.

While the details of Ashley Scott’s death are still sketchy, it is known that Jeffrey Scott did call a doctor friend to examine his wife hours after the argument occurred. The doctor attempted to perform CPR on Ashley Scott. After the doctor was unable to revive Ashley, Jeffrey Scott called 911. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Ashley Scott’s husband, Jeffrey Scott (30yrs old), has been charged with first degree murder. A mental evaluation was preformed on Scott at the request of his attorney. This evaluation found that Jeffrey Scott is competent to stand trial, but also noted a serious alcohol problem.

Ashley Scott’s family was unaware of any physical abuse. However Ashley’s friend, Elizabeth Scism says that Mrs. Scott had been suffering from the beating for a while. According to Ms. Scism, Ashley had threatened to leave her husband if the beatings continued. Elizabeth Scism also claims to have e-mails detailing the abuse. The details of those e-mails have not been released to the public.

Bolton High School students have been deeply effected by the death of their beloved teacher. There have been counselors on hand to help the students cope. There was also a candle light vigil around the flag pole on Monday to honor Ashley Scott’s memory. The students have also put together a tribute video for the teacher.

Jeffrey Scott appeared in court today, where his bail was set at $250,000. His attorney cited his reputation as a hardworking, law abiding citizen contributed to him receiving such a low bond. While on bail, Jeffrey Scott will be required to wear an ankle bracelet. His movement will be restricted, but prosecutors still worry that Jeffrey Scott is a flight risk. His parents own a successful computer business and investigators found Jeffrey Scott’s passport in plain view on the kitchen table the day of the murder.

That's so sad, I wonder if she ever went to school with black eyes or busted lips, most men that abuse, know where to do it so that it doesn't show.........RIP Ashley, sounds as though you were really loved by all your students and peers........such a shame!

Yeahh I saw that too. It's so sad that someone who had great potential and was helping kids now is gone. Instead we have more and more mediocre teachers.

MEMPHIS, TN -  A judge set a $250,000 bond for Jeffery Scott and his family has been able to come up with the money to let him come come. Scott is accused of beating his wife, Bolton High School teacher Ashley Scott to death on Thanksgiving.

Earlier, Scott's attorney said the Scott family was working out their finances --to see if they could afford to bring him home. They had to post $25,000, and the bond amount wasn't sitting well with prosecutors. In fact, the state didn't want Scott to have any bond at all.

Jeffery Scott stood in court today, as a row of friends and family in support behind him. It's his first appearance since he was cleared by a doctor as mentally fit to stand trial. But the doctor also pointed out 'serious alcohol abuse'. We could see a lot of talk of that as this case develops.

Scott's Attorney, Leslie Ballin says, "If there was a death as a result of argument or fight, and alcohol was involved, I would say that's pretty damn serious... We plan to remain alcohol and drug free."

Prosecutor Karen Cook says its how Ashley died that makes this case heinous. Police say there was no murder weapon. Instead, they say Scott beat her then left her in the garage.

Prosecutor Karen Cook says, "I understand the judge put a lot of restrictions on him, that he has restricted movement. However that's movement Ashley Scott will never ever have for the rest of her life.  I'm very disappointed in the amount of bond."

Cook worries Scott could be a flight risk, saying the Scott family owns a lucrative computer business. Also, a homicide investigator testified in court that Scott's passport sat on the kitchen table the day of the murder.

But even though Scott is now out on bond, it won't be life as usual. The judge says he'll have to wear an electronic monitor, check in with the court everyday, stay at his parents house from 7 PM to 7 AM each night, and he can't touch alcohol.

"I've learned that he is a hardworking person," says Ballin. "Generally a law-abiding person and the type of activity thats alleged is out of left field."

Scott received the $250,000 bond based on his mild-manered reputation and standing in the community. It's why his lawyer thinks the charge of premeditated murder doesn't fit the crime. Ballin says Scott is charged with an offense "that he did not intend to commit."

Scott will be back in court on December 12th. At that time, he could ask for a preliminary hearing.

It's so difficult though because one hit takes a fraction of a moment and the other 99.99% of the time he is being loving and sweet and the person you married, I can completely understand how many women stick it out. When someone you love does something terrible you can hate the act but not the person.
